There has been an issue with the readability of black background personalised number plates. The decision to remove the silver font helps to address this issue.
Yes, any plates that have been purchased previously can still be made.
Customers have until 30 November 2024 to have their plates made, after this date no plates with silver text will be made.

No, black plates with white text will continue to be available for customers to purchase through KiwiPlates.
The existing plates are not being recalled, so there is no requirement to change your plate to white text. If you choose to redesign your plate you are free to use any of the available designs on the KiwiPlates website at any time, and you’ll need to pay the relevant fee
Existing Black Plates that have been purchased are still legal; NZTA are not recalling these plates.
Any plates that were ordered before the cutoff deadline for silver text will still be honoured as long as the purchase is completed by 31 October 2024. You will also need to request manufacture by 30 November. After this date no plates with silver text will be made.
After 30 November 2024 you will still be able to have your plate manufactured in the same design however instead of silver text the plate will come with white text.
After your order has been approved it will be downloaded to Licensys (the plate manufacturer) where you can expect delivery within 15 working days.
